Cold and Flu. The things to can take to help keep them at bay and get over it faster.

It’s very important to know the difference between the flu and a cold.  While a cold can make you feel bad for a few days, the flu can make you feel quite ill for weeks. The flu can also result in serious health problems such as pneumonia and hospitalizations.

Colds usually begin with a sore throat, which usually goes away after a day or two, runny nose, and congestion follows, along with a cough by the fourth and fifth days. Fever is uncommon in adults, but a slight fever is possible. Children are more likely to have a fever with a cold. With colds, the nose teems with watery nasal secretions for the first few days. Later, these become thicker and darker. Dark mucus is natural and does not usually mean you have developed a bacterial infection, such as a sinus infection. Colds last about a week to 10 days and most times only affect the upper respiratory system.

The Flu is more severe than cold symptoms and comes on very quickly (overnight). Symptoms include a sore throat, fever, headache, muscle aches and soreness, congestion, and cough. Swine flu, in particular, is also associated with vomiting and diarrhea. Flu symptoms gradually improve in about five days, but it’s not uncommon to feel run down for 2 or 3 weeks. A common complication of the flu is pneumonia, particularly in the young, elderly, or people with lung or heart problems. If you notice shortness of breath, let your doctor know. Another common sign of pneumonia is fever that comes back after having been gone for a day or two.  The Flu virus infects the entire respiratory system and can disrupt other systems of the body as well.

Both Cold and Flu viruses enter your body through the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, or mouth. Every time you touch your hand to one of these areas, you could be infecting yourself with a virus, which makes it very important to keep hands germ-free with frequent washing to prevent both flu and colds.

Now to the very bad news. You can get a cold any time of year where the standard flu season runs from fall to spring of the next year. There are thousands of different types of cold and flu viruses and they mutated all the time, the Flu most of all. Which is why there is a new Flu vaccine every year, but even then, by the time we know the type of flu virus is the “dominant” one for that year it can mutate to something new making the vaccine less effective (but still a little helpful). This is what has happened this year. What was the “dominant” type when the season started has mutated to the point that the CDC is now telling us the vaccine has gone from 80% effective to 10%.  Now most Flu or influenza viruses have a very short life outside of a host, But this new mutation has changed that some. A news report this morning stated that they, the CDC, has found that this Flu virus can be spread within 6 feet of the infected person up to 30 min after a sneeze or a cough.

So, without an effective vaccine and with Georga being one of 16 states that are seeing extremely high reports of Flu what are we to do???
